“Pilar Sanchez, being part of the LGBTQIA+ community has been an incredible journey, an honor, and a privilege. As a partner in two iconic gay bars—The Tool Box, a community staple for 19 years, and now CockTales—Pilar has worked to create safe, inclusive spaces where people can truly be themselves. Providing opportunities for self-expression and offering jobs where individuals can thrive in their authenticity has been deeply rewarding.

Beyond her work in the nightlife industry, Pilar is a dedicated leader with a passion for making a difference. In her role in Business Development for a nonprofit organization, she actively contributes to initiatives that uplift and support the community.

When she’s not working, Pilar enjoys cooking, baking, sewing, decorating, caring for her plants, hoarding ideas on her Pinterest board, traveling, and spending time with her beloved dog, Bruno—ah, the life!

Through various roles and responsibilities, Pearl has consistently strived to enhance the financial landscape of our community with financial education presentations, workshops, and building meaningful relationships with businesses and organizations. Throughout her tenure, she has witnessed the positive impact Raiz Federal Credit Union has had on the lives of its members. As a certified Financial Counselor, she can help people achieve their homeownership dreams, start a small business, or navigate financial challenges.

Simultaneously, she holds key roles such as Treasurer for the El Paso Chapter of Credit Unions and Associate Director for Cornerstone Credit Union League Board. Most recently, she developed an Employee Resource Group at Raiz for LGBTQ+ employees and allies called Equal Grounds. Emiliana has been a steadfast pillar in her community, actively contributing to organizations like the Borderland Rainbow Center, the Girl Scouts of El Paso and Kids Excel El Paso, showing youth like her that they too have a place in our world. Emiliana has participated in choir, theatre arts and sports medicine with plans to pursue a career in Radiology, creating even more safe healthcare spaces for LGBTQIA2S+ people. When she's not advocating, she enjoys gaming, rescuing pugs, hanging out with her cats, and rapping.”

“ Toni Ramírez (she/ella) is a Tejana, desert person, fronteriza, organizer, and queer family physician who practices medicine with community at the forefront. She grew up in Socorro, completed her undergraduate and medical school training at Brown University and was trained in full spectrum family care at Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency in Northern California. Dr. Ramírez is dedicated to gender affirming care and reproductive justice care. Acknowledging the restrictions of a transactional, for-profit and colonized medical industry, she strives to challenge the way we practice medicine and move beyond the four walls of a clinical room. She currently practices at Project Vida Health Center and is grateful to being back home in El Paso where she loves being a tía and reconnecting with community alongside her wife and dog, Emilio.
To Toni, being a part of the LGBTQIA community shapes the way she engages in the world. Identifying as queer allowed for a sense of freedom from any boundary, framework, or ideology that defined any way to live, love, think, or express themselves. It brings her great joy to be a part of a community that shines in not only authenticity but rooted in our indigenous histories of love and community. !”

"As a transgender woman and leader in Inclusive Diversity & Equity (IDE), my work is deeply rooted in the belief that all women—cisgender, transgender, and non-binary individuals who align with womanhood—deserve to be seen, valued, and empowered. In my new role at a Fortune 100 company, I focus on driving cultural transformation by embedding inclusion into business strategies, amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities, and ensuring that every woman, regardless of identity or background, has fair access to opportunity.

International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the resilience, brilliance, and achievements of women across the world. It’s also a reminder that the fight for gender fairness must be intersectional. As a transgender woman, I have faced unique challenges in professional spaces—being underestimated, misgendered, or seen through the lens of my transition rather than my skills and leadership. Those experiences have only strengthened my commitment to breaking barriers and creating workplaces where all women, including transgender and non-binary women, are recognized for their talents and contributions rather than their differences.

The LGBTQIA2S+ community, particularly the women within it, has been a source of strength, advocacy, and progress. Our histories are filled with trailblazers who have fought for justice and inclusion, paving the way for those of us who now have a seat at the table. My mission is to ensure that table continues to grow—so that every woman, no matter how she identifies, has the space to lead, thrive, and inspire the next generation.

Today, we celebrate Dr. Jhoana Quezada!

“ Jhoana earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2010 and completed her Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Texas at Arlington in 2019. She is certified in Family Medicine by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and proudly holds El Paso’s only nurse practitioner board certification as an HIV Specialist from the American Academy of HIV Medicine.
Jhoana plays a vital role in serving El Paso’s diverse population. Her commitment to healthcare includes managing STIs, Hepatitis C, and HIV, as well as addressing complex hospital infections. She is enthusiastic about meeting the unique healthcare needs of the Southwest region and improving health outcomes for our community.

We often wonder how we can leave a mark on this world, but I've come to realize how much this world has changed me. Working within and for the LGBTQIA2S+ community has taught me love, resilience, and the ability to see the world through a lens that challenges our usual perspectives. It has been both a privilege and a source of pride to serve in a way that truly makes a difference for every patient I encounter, both in and out of the clinic.
Beyond the medicine, I'm deeply moved by the daily conversations and interactions with my patients. These moments teach me and allow me to understand the value of every smile and the significance of every tear. I hope to bring a glimmer of hope, comfort, and the assurance that, no matter what, you’ll always have an ally in me!”

“ Jhoana earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2010 and completed her Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Texas at Arlington in 2019. She is certified in Family Medicine by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and proudly holds El Paso’s only nurse practitioner board certification as an HIV Specialist from the American Academy of HIV Medicine.
Jhoana plays a vital role in serving El Paso’s diverse population. Her commitment to healthcare includes managing STIs, Hepatitis C, and HIV, as well as addressing complex hospital infections. She is enthusiastic about meeting the unique healthcare needs of the Southwest region and improving health outcomes for our community.

We often wonder how we can leave a mark on this world, but I've come to realize how much this world has changed me. Working within and for the LGBTQIA2S+ community has taught me love, resilience, and the ability to see the world through a lens that challenges our usual perspectives. It has been both a privilege and a source of pride to serve in a way that truly makes a difference for every patient I encounter, both in and out of the clinic.
Beyond the medicine, I'm deeply moved by the daily conversations and interactions with my patients. These moments teach me and allow me to understand the value of every smile and the significance of every tear. I hope to bring a glimmer of hope, comfort, and the assurance that, no matter what, you’ll always have an ally in me!”
